The UPDEA was created with the aim of promoting development and integration of the African power systems through the interconnection of networks, the exchanges of experiences and know-how as well as the pooling of energy resources in a win-win approach for all members.
Since 2002, UPDEA has adopted a new vision according to which, UPDEA must henceforth be the primary catalyst of the realisation of access to electricity for all the peoples of Africa . Therefore UPDEA has become a development oriented institution working in close collaboration with NEPAD and the African Union as far as the power projects of the continent are concerned.
Given that the energy resources are not equally spread throughout the continent, UPDEA committed itself to promote or initiate the setting up of sub regional power pools where necessary, in close relationships with Regional Economic Communities.
Now that each African sub-region has its power pool, the UPDEA is currently involved in harmonising their master plans and exchanging data and experiences. The final objective is to have in due time an African interconnected power system to allow load flow from North to South, from Central to West and East of the Continent, etc….
